August: Guannan Chen is the lead author on a new paper, with collaborators from Lehigh Univ., Univ. of Alabama, the CNR and University of Salento in Italy, and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, presenting a new approach to measuring band offsets in individual nanostructures, just published in Nano Letters. Congratulations on this exciting work!
June: Congratulations to Spanier Group alumnus Dr. Stephen S. Nonnenmann on his new faculty appointment! Effective fall 2013 Stephen will be an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst!

Congrats once again to Stephanie– this time on her being awarded a fellowship to attend and participate in the NSF-sponsored Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) in “Scalable, Functional Nanomaterials” in Costa Rica for 10 days in August. Stephanie’s poster on magnetoelectric nanowires was also nominated for the Best Poster award in her session at the Spring 2011 MRS Meeting, and her poster also took top honors for Best Overall in the Engineering Graduate Research Symposium in May at Drexel.
Congratulations to Oren D. Leaffer on his selection and recognition as a recipient of a 2011 National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Program. Oren will be spending much of his summer “down under” at the University of New South Wales in Australia working on nanowire device fabrication in support of his PhD thesis work.
Congratulations to Stephanie H. Johnson on her being selected to participate in the ONR Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP). Stephanie will be carrying out research on magnetoelectric nanostructure synthesis, device fabrication and characterization at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport RI this summer.

Congratulations to Dominic on his successful defense of his MS thesis entitled “Use of spectroscopic ellipsometry in determining composition and thickness in BST films” on May 28! Following his successful M.S. defense and graduation in June, Dominic has just accepted and started a new position on the engineering staff of Valence Process Equipment, Inc. in Malvern PA.
Congratulations to Stephen for his selection as one of six Highly Commended graduate students from across Drexel University following nominations for the Research Awards for 2010! Stephen was recognized for his accomplishments in a ceremony at Drexel on June 1. He has also been awarded the with the “Best Doctoral Dissertation” in the category of Mathematical Sciences and Engineering, and was recognized at Commencement on June 11.

Professor Spanier is honored at a White House ceremony as one of 58 researchers to receive a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).† The PECASE is the nation’s highest honor for professionals at the outset of their independent research careers. Spanier is the first assistant professor at Drexel to be selected for this recognition since the inception of the program in 1996 under President Clinton. Professor Spanier (Co-PI) with Drexel colleagues Professor Yury Gogotsi (PI) and other co-PIs Dean Mun Choi, and University of Pennsylvania Professors Dawn Bonnell and A.T.”Charlie” Johnson receive a five-year $3M Interdisciplinary Research Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grant from the NSF that will support twelve PhD students at Drexel and UPenn to study and carry out doctoral research in nanoscience and nanotechnology with participating faculty.
